Project Type: Exterior Restoration; Historic Structure Report
Wilderstein was built in 1852-53 for Thomas Holy Suckley as an Italianate villa overlooking the Hudson River. It was continuously occupied by the Suckley family until 1991, leaving the home preserved virtually intact, including the 1880s-90s wall coverings, floor coverings, fixtures and furniture.

Wilderstein after the recreation of the 1880s paint scheme.
Following the completion of a historic structure report, John G. Waite Associates began supervision of the phased exterior restoration of Wilderstein. The first phase of work consisted of the restoration of the upper half of the tower, including the tower roof and finial. Subsequent phases of work included repair and replacement of slate roofing, restoration of the iron and sheet metal finials, restoration of the porte-cochere, restoration of porches, and exterior wood siding and trim restoration and replacement. A flat portion of the building's roof and ornamental metal cresting was replicated in terne-coated stainless steel.
